It is not a question of "if" but of "when" a shotgun shell not conforming to C.I.P specs will cause a failure to feed or a failure to extract, especially in semi-auto shotguns. Clearing such a malfunction during a shotgun match costs precious seconds and if multiple out-of-spec shells were loaded a whole stage may be lost.
To avoid such ammunition related issues, it is a sensible precaution to test shotgun shells with the TECTAL gauge for 12 ga shells especially before a match.
For matches it is recommended to use only shotgun shells which pass the gauging, any shells which are hard to insert or cannot be inserted into the gauge may still be useful for training etc. depending on the actual chamber size of the individual gun.
Based on our own experience especially buckshot shells are prone to a deformation of the case due to the placement of the shot during filling and crimping.

Maintenance / Coating:

•  After use, it is sufficient to wipe of the inside and outside of the gauge with a clean, lint -free cloth 

•  The coating is applied electrochemically. Where the Aluminium part is suspended during processing it may show minute, bare spots where contact has taken place. These have no impact on the durability and resilience of the coating. Coatings resp. surfaces are subject to long term wear. Process related spots as well as usage related wear are not considered a defect.
