Gauge for 12ga sheet steel box magazines used in resp. made by Typhoon, Derya, Anatolian Arms... more

Gauge for 12ga sheet steel box magazines used in resp. made by Typhoon, Derya, Anatolian Arms etc.

Advantages:

  • Easy check of the correct distance of the feed lips for CIP cartridges to avoid failures to feed

  • Quick check of the magazine edges resp. width to ensure easy insertion and release of the magazine without requiring the actual gun

  • Simple to use and clear markings on the gauge itself
  • Made from high-strength Aluminium with hard coating for longevity

Use:
  • To check the distance of the magazine feed lips load the gauge into the magazine like a cartridge and push down. The gauge shall pass between the feed lips without resistance - otherwise correct the position of the feed lips.
The width of the gauge conforms to the standardised CIP-dimension for the max. width of a 12ga shot shell.
  • To check the edges resp. width of the magazine especially in the area where it rests in the mag well of the gun, slide the gauge along the front and back of the magazine body. The width of the magazine body shall not exceed the width of the recess in the gauge. Carefully remove any burrs or excessive coating (on occasion the coating of the magazine body is of considerable thickness) resp. correct any deformations found.
The width of the recess in the gauge conforms to the typical width of the mag well of the Derya MK12.

... some background:

The correct function of the magazine is essential for the reliability of the whole system and magazine issues are one of the main problems when it comes to the reliability of semi-auto box magazine fed shotguns.
The shot shells must be guided accurately by the magazine feed lips to avoid failures to feed while the dimension and shape of the magazine body is critical to ensure easy insertion and release of the magazine.
Common sheet steel box magazines from Derya, Typhoon, etc. have proven to be reliable during training and competition (provided they are kept clean) BUT if such a magazine hits the floor at a bad angle or is kicked away unintentionally after a reload on a stage, experience has shown that

  • the magazine feed lips can be bent quite easily - something that in the best case will be noticed during loading but in the worst case will only be noticed by failures to feed on the next stage.
  • the edges of the magazine body can be damaged (burrs, dents etc.) and if this damage is located on the upper part of the magazine which rests inside the mag well of the gun this will cause problems with the insertion and release of the magazine.

While this may be of little consequence during casual shooting or training, utmost reliability is key during an IPSC shotgun match where every second counts and the number of magazines routinely carried is limited. As magazines may only be inserted into the gun immediately prior to the start signal upon the command "load and make ready" any testing of a magazine during competition was virtually impossible which is why we have developed this gauge to quickly and easily check for the the two most common issues of critical importance for proper function.
